How it works
Taking a percentage of a percentage multiplies the two rates. For example, 20% of 50% is 0.20 × 0.50 = 0.10, or 10%. Useful for successive rates, partial discounts, and probability-style questions.
Frequently asked questions
What is 20% of 50%?
20% of 50% is 10%. Multiply 0.20 × 0.50 = 0.10, then convert to 10%.
Is this the same as successive discounts?
Not exactly. Successive discounts apply each rate to a remaining amount. “X% of Y%” only multiplies the two percentages. Use the Successive Discounts calculator for stacked sale prices.
Why is my answer a decimal?
Percentage math often yields non-whole numbers. Round to the precision you need for your context (money usually uses 2 decimals; grades may use 1 or 2).
